How to Prepare for Cold and Flu Season

As the weather cools down, we all look forward to the impending holidays and warm evenings next to the fire with some comfort food in the oven. However, with all the excitement comes dread, as it is the season of sniffles, coughing, and fever. Cold and flu season is in full swing from October through April, and we can all agree that we would be happier without it. But alas, we do not live in a perfect world, so what are a few things that you can do to prepare for some of the sick days ahead? At GetLocal.ie, we understand the struggle and have put together this list to give you a helping hand.

Supplies

Facial tissues, hand sanitiser, hand soap, and disinfectant wipes all come in handy when preparing for the cold and flu season. We recommend picking up a heating pad to help with the chills. Don’t forget extra cosy blankets and pillows to make resting that much easier.

Stock Up on Medicine

Over-the-counter medication can bring some relief to offset cold and flu symptoms. Some items to keep in the press are; pain relievers, congestion or sinus pain relievers, decongestants, something to help with a runny nose and watery eyes, dry cough relievers, and sore throat relievers.

Test Your Thermometer

You will need a working thermometer to ensure your temperature is at a safe level or going down with some help from the medication you have stocked up on. We know you probably have a trusty thermometer lying around your house for a while now, so make sure the batteries work before the fever hits.

Clean Your Humidifier

Having a humidifier on while you are sick is beneficial as it increases moisture in the air, easing symptoms and reducing nasal congestion. Water vapour can make breathing more manageable, especially with a runny nose or dry cough. Of course, we want to keep our humidifier clean and ready for use, so to do this, make sure the unit is unplugged and fill the base with 1cup of water and 1cup of white vinegar and leave it to sit for an hour. We don’t recommend sitting in the room with it, as vinegar can be a very potent aroma but will naturally disinfect without causing any harm to you or the environment.

Disinfect, Disinfect, Disinfect

Disinfecting your home and surroundings should be a regular practice before sickness hits, but it is essential when you are not feeling well. Wiping down things like doorknobs, cell phones, and remote controls after use can significantly reduce germs spread around your home. We don’t want to give the other people living with us our cold now, do we?

Be Ready for Sick Kids

Kids can still get bored even when they are sick, plus they may need a distraction from the sniffles and coughs. Be sure to have some games to keep them busy and upbeat. A few examples are; books, board gamesactivity books, and puzzles

Rest

The most important thing you can do when feeling under the weather is rest! Let your body focus on healing, so put away your work and worries for another day. Focus on catching up on your sleep or put your feet up and relax; you will feel better in no time.
