How to Create an Eye-Catching Bookcase

Everyone enjoys a good read, from expanding our knowledge base to diving into other worlds. The adventures and possibilities are endless with a book in our hands. We are no exception to this, as the Irish have been voted the most bookish of Europe, and with authors like Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker from our little corner of the world, why wouldn’t we be? With all this reading, your books will need a bookcase to call their own. Your collection will feel right at home with organisation and a little decor. Here at GetLocal.ie, we have created a list of a few tips and tricks for you to build an eye-catching bookcase and be able to find just the book you are looking for when the urge for a good read strikes.

Choosing the Right BookCase

Before organising one, you must choose the right bookcase for your space. Start with measurements to ensure it will fit perfectly because banging your toe has to be one of the most annoying pains. Next, you will want to determine the style and colour to match your decor. Do you want open shelves or closed ones in the back? Do you want a tall grand case or a small dainty little thing? When it comes to colour, you want to be sure it doesn’t clash with the other furniture in the room.

Organisation

Organising the books on the shelves is one of the top priorities for decor’s sake and finding just the read you are looking for at any given time. It opens up some free space on your shelves as well. However, how you want to organise your books is up to you entirely. For some, colour coding works best. Colour coding takes book covers in the same colours and groups them on the shelf. For others, alphabetical is best either by author or by title.

Add Some Nature

Adding some natural colour and life to your bookcase can be done by adding a few indoor plants. Of course, you will want to be sure that you have the proper holders for these green beauties as you wouldn’t want to get any moisture on your collection of fictional friends. We have written a couple of articles on how to find the best indoor plants for your space; check them out to choose the best one for you!

Feature Photos or Artwork

Featuring photos and artwork is when organising pays off since it adds more space for personality! Consider throwing in feature photos of your loved ones or even some of your favourite artwork to add more character. Be sure to pick the perfect frames for either, and you will be on the right track for an eye-catching display of your tastes.

Bookends

If you went with a more open-shelf concept for your collection, adding bookends could tie everything together. At the very least, it will keep your books from falling over on your or your guests. The first thought that comes to mind when thinking of bookends is those boring metal pieces used in libraries. But have no fear! There are a variety of unique bookends that you can find locally.

Pieces of Bric-A-Brac

Adding a few pieces of bric-a-brac can be a lovely conversation starter. From globes to bunnies, the possibilities are endless. Are you adding a few souvenirs from your last holiday? Grand! Are you adding some Alice in Wonderland pieces to show your Lewis Caroll obsession? Sure, you can do that too! The possibilities are endless here.

Balance

Balance is the last thing to remember when finishing up your bookcase. We don’t want one end cluttered while the other end lies bare. We want to ensure that we haven’t added so much that it takes away from the valid reason for the case in the first place, our books! Being able to pick and pull the books we are looking for quickly off the shelves is very important to keep in mind.

We hope that this list helps you create your eye-catching bookcase. When getting all of your supplies together, keep GetLocal.ie in mind as we make discovering from Irish businesses more accessible than ever. Discover local with GetLocal.ie.
