Spider plants are hard to kill, purify the air, are safe for pets, and increase the humidity in the area around them. These all sound like brilliant reasons to start your indoor plant space with this plant! They are often hung in hanging plant pots which is an excellent solution if you are low on work-top, window, and floor space. Also, no need to worry, the name of this plant has nothing to do with actual spiders. It refers to the tiny plantlets or offshoots at the end of the long wiry stems that look “spidery”.
The spider plant is considered to be one of the easiest and most adaptable houseplants to keep in indoors. This means they tolerate a reasonable amount of abuse making them great starter plants. The key points for caring are a bright location with no direct sunlight, watering them well, and letting the soil fully dry out between waterings. Don’t worry if you see the leave tips browning, it’s usually a result of fluoride in the water. You could try distilled water or rainwater instead.

Monstera Deliciosa is just fun to say. You have to admit it! The name comes from Latin, which means monster (Monstera) and delicious (Deliciosa), which refers to its massive size in the wild, often reaching 20metres tall and equally wide. It is gorgeous and makes the space around it look instantly more attractive. As with the other plants on our list, it also can clean the air. It is important to note that the leaves and roots are toxic to humans and animals, so keep them up and out of the way if you have pets or children.
This plant is nicknamed The Swiss Cheese Plant because of its whimsical and pretty leaves with holes.
This lush and jungle-feeling vine plant is a real eyecatcher. It is low maintenance but is sensitive to temperature. First, don’t water too much, only when the top few centimetres of the soil feel dry to touch. Make sure you let all water drain away after watering it and don’t let it sit in a soggy pot. This plant will thrive in temperatures between 20-30ºC, with some misting to keep the humidity up. But here comes the warning: At around 10ºC and under, it will stop growing and frost will kill it. The Monstera is perfect for apartment or office life where the building temperature stays relatively constant.

Despite the name, the Rubber Plant is not made of rubber, so it does have some maintenance and upkeep to keep in mind. The name refers to the texture of the leaves, which in fact, are pretty rubbery like in feeling. The good news is that this plant is relatively low in maintenance and has a very striking look about it. It is a natural humidifier and is perfect for brightening up a windowsill or desk in your office space.
Rubber plants like light but not direct sun. Water the top two centimetres of the soil but only when it’s dry. Those big leaves are all about photosynthesis and getting vitality from the light. That means wipe the leaves lightly to remove dust and give them extra humidity with regular misting. Misting means – getting a spray bottle of water and gently spraying (mist) the leaves. In the spring and summer, it will benefit from a monthly liquid feed.
