23 September marks a joyous occasion for those who enjoy crisp weather, orange leaves, and yummy comfort food. It is the first day of Autumn! It’s time to celebrate the harvest season, enjoy a good cuppa, and cosy up in our favourite cafes! Although summer lovers are mourning the end of their season, outdoor lovers can rejoice with us, knowing that this doesn’t have to mark the end of enjoying your garden or patio space. Changing out a few items can make your outdoor space enjoyable, no matter how crisp the air gets. Redecorating your outdoor space may seem like an enormous task, but here at GetLocal.ie, we want to share some tricks, tips, and hacks to make getting your outdoor space Autumn-ready a little easier.
Warmth
Coming in at the top of our list is one of the most important aspects of enjoying our time outdoors when the weather starts to cool down. Shivering and enjoying an evening out on the patio or in the garden don’t go well together. Patio heaters come in handy in colder times such as these. Keep in mind the space you are working with and what is safe, as we don’t want your evening outside to turn into a visit from the fire brigade. Gas heaters work well for larger areas such as a back garden, while electric heaters are better suited for smaller spaces such as a patio.
Cosy Ambience
The Autumn aesthetic is about the cosy ambience with warm hues and a roaring fire. Of course, a roaring fire is not appropriate when talking about a patio makeover, but a fire pit would do nicely in a back garden setting. If you are working with a patio area, adding some candles can give the same fireside effect as long as you keep an eye on them as they burn. Going with the theme, inviting scents such as cinnamon, baked goods, vanilla, and sage are best. String lights and lanterns can also give off warm vibes and are a very safe way to keep to the aesthetic with no supervision required. Create a place you would like to cosy up and read a book in and you will be on the right track. Speaking of books, read our article on Irish Poetry to get some reading ideas.
Furniture
Switching out summer outdoor furniture with some more Autumn-inspired pieces can cosy up your space. Say goodbye to the sun chairs and umbrella loungers and hello to ottomans and outdoor sofas. You won’t need to switch Benches out as long as you can find some comfy outdoor cushions to make them a little more inviting during the cooler weather.
Textures
When transitioning to a cosy outdoor space, incorporate layers of textures with rugs, cushions, and throws. Just picture sitting with your friends having a chat while curled up with soft throw-on comfy cushions; sounds heavenly, doesn’t it? Finding throws specifically for outdoor use might be a little tough, but finding soft throws and only taking them outside when you are out there is an excellent fix to that problem as long as you choose ones you can throw in the wash.
Decor
Adding a little fall decor is the icing on the autumn spice cake to your patio or garden space makeover. When you think of this season, what comes to mind? Pumpkins, leaves, autumn plants like mums, and maybe some orange ribbon are all jumping-off points to get you started. Don’t forget some durable wine glasses for those outdoor game nights in your revamped space. If you have loved ones on their way to enjoy your new cosy patio or garden, why not cook some fresh baked goods before they arrive and set them out to add to the ambience?
