Plants
First things first, you will need plants! Now, the plants you want to grow are entirely up to you. You will need to know if you are growing indoors or outdoors first and go from there. Do you like flowers? Herbs? Fruits and vegetables? Choosing what you will be growing is one of the most exciting parts of being a new plant parent. If you have selected indoor growing, look at our indoor plant discovering guides, parts 1 and 2, for help on where to start.
Plant Pots
Now that you know what plants you will be growing, you will need something to plant them in. Of course, you can plant them in the ground if you have chosen outdoors as your grow of choice. But, regardless if you choose indoor or outdoor, planting pots are essential items to have. A floating shelf is handy for placing smaller planting pots if you are growing indoors. Don’t forget to pick up some potting soil, too, so that your plants can get all the nutrients they usually get from the ground.
Water
Water is essential for every living thing and includes your new plant babies. A water filtration system is something to look into if you have hard water at home since that can be a little rough on your plants. However, you don’t have to run out and discover one right now, and it is just something to keep in mind. A plant mister is great for indoor plants that thrive in humidity and need moist but not-soaked soil. You can use a watering can for watering your plants that require more than a mist. Be sure to pay close attention to how much water each growing plant needs, as you don’t want to dehydrate or drown them.
Tools
Gardening tools are essential in helping take care of plants. Let’s talk about some of the basic ones you might need. Garden gloves help protect your hands while you plant or prune. A small shovel will help you move the soil around as you plant. Garden shears will help you prune your plants. A seed machine spreader will make outdoor planting much easier and more time efficient. Plant stakes will help new plants grow straight and survive heavy winds. You can dig small holes and remove weeds with a trowel. And a hand rake is ideal for removing small pieces of debris away from your growing area.
