Sensory Gifts for the Stressed Out Teen

Sensory objects are an excellent way to help teens with processing difficulties calm down, organise, and focus their attention. These objects come in handy when a teen is stressed, anxious, or needs to keep their attention during homework or in a classroom setting. Many sensory toys are made for younger age groups than teens, but if you are on the hunt for one, we have you covered. Check out our curated list of sensory gift ideas for the stressed-out teen.

Fidget Toys

When someone is anxious or restless, they may fidget or make small movements. Fidget toys give these movements an outlet for your teen that could help calm their nerves, relieve stress, and serve as a distraction in an overstimulating environment. Rubber push poppers are very popular for distraction and are quiet, so they won’t disturb others. Fidget spinners are another great toy that helps with feeling anxious or overwhelmed. Thinking putty can be used for any of the benefits mentioned above but is better suited when your teen has the space to pull it out and work with it.

Having a Ball

There are a variety of sensory objects that come in ball form depending on what the user wants to achieve. A stress ball is brilliant for squeezing to release built-up tension. A squishy ball is used more for fidgeting and the need for distraction from the surrounding environment. A gel ball has the same benefits as the squishy one, except it is a different texture because not everyone is a fan of the squish.

Mood Lighting

Lighting can affect your teen’s mood and behaviour. Bright lights can heighten emotions and affect appetite, while natural light can make them happier and increase their ability to focus and think. Even the flicker of fluorescent lights has been shown to cause distractedness and headaches for many teens who are more sensitive to sensory stimulation. In this instance, a sensory mood light would be a valuable gift as it is designed with the facts listed above in mind. But even having something like a lava lamp for your teen to focus on the soft glow and colours would help relieve stress. Strip lights are another excellent option as they allow users to choose the best colour lighting they would like.

For Muscle Tension Release

When we are stressed, our muscles tense up. Muscle tension is a reflex reaction to stress and the body’s way of guarding us against pain or injury. When stress starts, the muscles tense up and won’t release until the stress has passed. For teens that are stressed out often or for extended periods, it is critical to have something that will remove the muscle tension so no long-term damage happens. A mini massager would be beneficial for releasing tense muscles and can travel anywhere with them. Now, during times of high stress, they can relax their body which helps relax the mind.
