Cotoneaster 'Queen of Carpets' – Planting & Care Guide
About Cotoneaster 'Queen of Carpets'
Cotoneaster 'Queen of Carpets' is a low-growing, evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub that forms a dense, spreading carpet of glossy green foliage. During late spring and early summer, it produces clusters of small white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. These are followed by bright red berries in autumn and winter, providing valuable food for birds and adding long-lasting seasonal interest.
Growing to approximately 20–30cm in height while spreading 1–1.5 metres, this hardy shrub is ideal for ground cover, banks, slopes, rockeries and the front of borders. Its vigorous growth helps suppress weeds, making it an excellent low-maintenance landscaping plant.
Planting Guide
Plant in full sun or partial shade.
Flowers and berries are most abundant when grown in full sun.
Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to most soil types.
Suitable for clay, loam, chalk and sandy soils.
Improve poor soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently loosen the roots.
Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil.
Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Space plants 80cm–1 metre apart for effective ground cover.
