PTFE thread seal tape for sealing threaded pipe joints. Also sold as plumber's tape or thread tape — a thin polytetrafluoroethylene film wound on a spool, applied to male threads before assembly.
How to wrap it
Wrap in the same direction the fitting will tighten — clockwise looking at the end of the thread — so screwing the joint together pulls the tape into the thread rather than unravelling it. Three to five turns is normal for a parallel thread; tapered threads want a little more. Keep the tape off the first thread so shreds don't end up inside the pipe.
What it does
PTFE fills the spiral gap between male and female threads and lets the joint pull up tighter without galling. It isn't an adhesive and it won't rescue a damaged or out-of-round thread — if a joint is weeping because the thread is chewed, tape won't fix it.
Water and gas
Standard white PTFE tape is intended for water and general pipework. Gas installations require tape rated and certified for gas service, which is a different product — check the packet and the relevant standard before using any tape on a gas line, and if you're not certain, ring us on 01 836 6142 and we'll tell you what's in stock.
