Description:
Its inland location far from the sea has for centuries side-lined this area from world markets, producing wines with its own characteristic elements.
Innovations in grape varieties and production methods have recently been introduced. It was the first place in Catalonia where the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay were introduced, alongside its native varieties, and also “California” winemaking techniques were adopted.
As far back as 1770, the monks of the Montserrat abbey carried out their penance at the Desterrats estate. The area was known for its extreme climate and harsh conditions. Their task: working the land to provide food for the diocese. Their legacy: discovering a new terroir and a superlative wine. The legend: Enormous barrels vanishing mysteriously. Some said it was the angels taking them to heaven...
Tasting Note:Extraordinary dark cherry red color with great depth. Intense floral (violet) and fruit (cassis) aroma with exquisite Mediterranean garrigue (thyme) coming through, joined by notes of smoke and spices (cocoa). Full and intense on the palate, with ripe, velvety, wonderfully elegant tannins. An exceptional wine, flavorful and full bodied, with a characteristic, terroir-imparted hint of minerality (graphite).
Food Matches: Given the wine's tannin and fruit characteristics, it pairs beautifully with a wide variety of meat dishes. Serve at 14–16°C.
Schödl farm comprises of 18-ha planted on diverse type of soils, based in Weinviertel. It is run by brothers and sister, Viktoria, Mathias, and Leonhard. Their father was a teacher at Klosterneuberg (the oldest winemaking school in the world) and used the family’s old-school dugout cellar as a community hub, helping his neighbours make blending decisions and tame wild fermentations. After finishing wine school and completing extensive experiences abroad, the young siblings converted their family winery into organic production. Mathias focuses on the biodiversity in the vineyards; wild herbs, grasses and chamomile grow between the vines to provide living space for beneficial insects such as butterflies, ladybirds, and earthworms.
100% Grüner Veltliner. Deep loess and chalky clay soils are the base of what makes this Grüner tick: sourced from three of the family vineyards Blumenthal, In der Kreuthern, and Steinberg, the parcels blended here are a representation of all of the most important soil types and aspects across their vineyards. 10% is skin-fermented for 24 hours. The wine is then fermented in a mix of concrete egg, clay amphora, and large format wood--both oak and acacia. The wine spends ten months on full lees before blending. Unfined/unfiltered
