Country: South Africa Region: Simonsberg, Stellenbosch Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot Colour: Red Style: Dry Producer: KanonKop Description: Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region of the Cape and confidently boasts with some of South Africa’s most premium wines. Kanonkop is a fourth generation family estate, which was originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. This estate has since then been handed down from father to son for over 40 years and is now in the talented, capable hands of its current owners Paul & Johann Krige. Kanonkop The name Kanonkop was derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships plying the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town. Tasting Note: A Cape classic since 1981.A traditional blend of approximately 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot, it is matured in new 225 litre French Nevers barrels for 22-26 months. It is often described as more elegant than the straight Cabernet Sauvignon from Kanonkop. Full bodied deep ruby colour. Cassis, black currant and berry flavours. An elegant classic and complex wine that should improve over the next 10 – 15 years. Best served with meat dishes. Food Matches: Red Meat / Blue Cheese / Goat Cheese / Venison 96 points – Tim Atkin MW Special South Africa Report 2019 “How do you follow a 100-point red? It’s not easy. But by any standards, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc is still one hell of a wine, even in a difficult year. Grippy, focused and slightly leaner than the 2015, but with savoury tannins and plenty of youthful fruit concentration. 2022-36”
