Country: Spain Region: Rioja Varietal: 95% Tempranillo, 5% Garnacha Category: Red Wine Style: Dry Producer: Bodegas Luis Canas Description:Luis Cañas Crianza is a red wine from D.O. La Rioja produced by Bodegas Luis Cañas in Villabuena, Álava. In 1970, this producer started to bottle and market their wines when many others still sold wines in bulk. In 1994, they opened a new winery with the most modern production systems. They own 350 hectares, mainly planted on clayey-calcareous soils, distributed in 870 plots located in La Rioja Alavesa, an area with an excellent wine tradition. They use a rational viticulture that does not use any herbicides or synthetic fertilisers. The climate of Rioja Alavesa is a transition between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean climate. The Sierra de Cantabria mountain range protects form the winds and storm from the north, creating a dry climate with large temperature variations that make it perfect for the cultivation of vines and their optimal ripening. This wine is made with Tempranillo (95%) and a small amount of Garnacha (5%), which gives it a more fruity character. The grapes used to make Luis Cañas Crianza come from vineyards with an average age of 30 years. After the grapes are harvested, they ferment at a controlled temperature of 26ºC for 20 days. Tasting Notes:Deep red cherry colour. Intense and very complex on the nose, with aromas of ripe black fruit and creamy notes reinforced by spicy and earthy nuances. It is ample on the palate, with plenty of volume, holding well in the mid palate and polished. Powerful and vivid showing liquorice and bitter chocolate notes.
